Our UTILITY TROUSERS / DENIM are based on a traditional baker pants pattern and made in Japan from a 9oz denim fabric. They feature a urea button fly, adjustable waist cinches, classic baker pockets, and two button-closure pockets at the rear.
The baker pant emerged as part of a post-World War II overhaul of U.S. military uniforms, replacing herringbone twill (HBT) and debuting in 1952 as part of the OG-107 uniform. With a straightforward design, they featured four patch pockets, belt loops, and durable cotton sateen fabric.
They quickly became a staple for general-duty work in tropical environments and were widely used during post-war deployments. Their utilitarian design has since transitioned into civilian fashion and by the 1960s and 70s, fatigue pants had become widely available through army surplus stores and were adopted by various subcultures. Anti-war protestors used them as symbols of peace, often pairing them with military jackets like the M-65 to make a statement against the Vietnam War. Climbers, hippies, punks, and “rockers” also embraced their functional design, appreciating their durability and easy repairability.
