The U.S. NAVY CHAMBRAY SHIRT / USS KIDD is constructed from a lightweight 5oz cotton chambray, featuring navy blue urea buttons, selvedge gusseted hem and symmetrical buttoned patch pockets to the chest. The collar structure faithfully replicates the refined profile of traditional Navy shirts, while the short sleeves are inspired by the warm-weather variations commonly worn by sailors in tropical climates. The U.S. NAVY CHAMBRAY SHIRT / USS KIDD features a USS KIDD emblem patch above the left chest pocket and an original graphic on the back, inspired by a tradition of British Royal Navy submariners. The back graphic’s symbols signify this ships distinguished service, from left to right, prints represent the ship’s participation in the Battle of Okinawa, its involvement in rescue operations, and the number of enemy aircraft downed.
The Real McCoy's Uniforms U.S. NAVY CHAMBRAY SHIRT / USS KIDD is a reproduction of the WW2 U.S. Navy sailor uniform shirt. Originally introduced in 1913 by the USN, the chambray shirt has a rich history of being a menswear staple many years before it was adopted by the military. It was described in 1941 by the United States Navy Uniform Regulations as part of a uniform "worn by officers and enlisted men when engaged in work which by reason of its nature would soil their other uniforms... this pertains more particularly to those in the engineers force, to artisans, and mechanicians, to the deck force when scaling or painting the ship or handling stores.” The garment was worn by many in the USN including sailors and Chief Petty Officers by virtue of its versatility as a uniform piece. For cost effectiveness, the Chambray shirt underwent a number of simplifications throughout its manufacture, while this model is true to the more elaborate and considered early iterations.
Our latest iteration of the U.S. NAVY CHAMBRAY SHIRT has been modified to be slightly shorter in overall length allowing for more versatile styling and the option to wear untucked.
The USS Kidd, a Fletcher-class destroyer of the U.S. Navy, was named in honor of Rear Admiral Isaac C. Kidd, who was killed during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Known as the Pirate of the Atlantic and Pacific, the ship gained its unique identity through its connection to 17th-century pirate William Kidd, also known as Captain Kidd. Inspired by the ship’s name, the crew adopted Captain Kidd as their mascot, painting his image on the forward smokestack.
This pirate symbolism was approved by Admiral Kidd’s widow, who not only endorsed the idea but also secured Navy authorisation for the USS Kidd to fly the Jolly Roger. This made it the only U.S. Navy warship permitted to fly the iconic pirate flag.
