Between the 1930s and 1950s, as mail-order catalogs surged in popularity, outerwear used for everyday life was broadly labeled "sports jackets." Without a rigid definition, this category encompassed a wide range of materials and silhouettes, making it one of the most expressive and creatively diverse styles of the era. This ambiguity allowed manufacturers to innovate freely, shaping the early character of American outerwear.

In the 1930s, lightweight leather jackets became popular for both leisure and labor. Their durability made them suitable for cycling and other active pursuits, while their toughness also saw them widely used in agricultural work and by tradesmen in the city. Leather's long-lasting nature made these jackets a smart investment at a time when resources were scarce.

The 30S LEATHER SPORTS JACKET / NELSON is a faithful recreation of jackets from this period. Based on an original vintage piece from our archive, the Nelson jacket is crafted from the finest quality vegetable-tanned horsehide with a pigment finish. Back then most sports jackets featured a closed-end type zipper. For practicality, they soon changed to separable-ended zippers which we are more familiar with in today's modern zippers. The jacket is lined with cotton herringbone twill and assembled using period-correct stitching to reflect the characteristics of a jacket from the Great Depression era. Construction includes a zipped chest pocket, two slash hand pockets, and adjustable iron-pressed buckle side adjusters on the back.
