The 8HU CIGARETTE POCKET MOCK-TWIST CHAMBRAY WORK SHIRT is a faithful reproduction of a distinctive 1930s workwear design, easily recognized by its asymmetrical front pockets. Crafted from mock twist heather cotton chambray, it features cotton thread construction and sturdy metal buttons, using materials true to the era. The most defining feature is the left chest pocket, originally designed with a flap to store cigarettes safely, protecting them from sweat and moisture while on the job.
As the United States entered World War II, material shortages and government regulations forced manufacturers to simplify their designs. Nonessential details, such as flap pockets, were eliminated and replaced with what became known as the mountain pocket. This alternative featured a distinctive triangular, peak-shaped upper edge and was constructed without a flap in order to conserve fabric.
Despite wartime limitations, manufacturers remained committed to balancing function with design. The mountain pocket became a practical solution that preserved the utility and character of prewar shirts. After the war, while many brands continued with the simplified wartime patterns, others returned to the original flap-pocket design, reviving the individuality and craftsmanship that had previously defined American workwear.
