The Joe McCoy WOOL FIELD SPORTS JACKET / RED PLAID is a revival of a classic menswear garment of the early 20th century. It features a RED PLAID wool cloth fabric with horsehide leather trimming and elbow reinforcement, as well as a brass bell-style zipper on the chest pocket. There are also two cinch-style adjusters on the back of the jacket.
Between the 1930s and 1950s, as mail-order catalogs surged in popularity, outerwear used for everyday life was broadly labeled “sports jackets.” Without a rigid definition, this category encompassed a wide range of materials and silhouettes, making it one of the most expressive and creatively diverse styles of the era. This ambiguity allowed manufacturers to innovate freely, shaping the early character of American outerwear.
The design is heavily influenced by the 'Sportswear' coats produced in the interwar period. Button fastening was the mainstream until the 1930s, when high-quality zippers were introduced. It made for a durable and useful garment in the colder months, with its heavy wool and leather trimming to stand against abrasion and the wear of time, and its shorter length so that it didn't stand in the way of a worker’s range of movement.
