The Wool Varsity Jacket is a reinterpretation of a 1960s icon and a uniquely American tradition, where athletic achievement and school pride met in a garment. Originally introduced in the early twentieth century as warm-up wear for baseball players, the jacket soon spread across college campuses, where it became a symbol of team identity and personal accomplishment. Over time, these garments were customized with school colors, initials, mascots, and commemorative patches, evolving into what became known as “lettered” or “award” jackets.
This edition of the Wool Varsity Jacket is constructed from Oil Cut Wool, a specially developed fabric treated to reduce natural oils in the fiber. This gives the wool a drier handle, vintage appearance, and improved resistance to dirt, making it both easier to maintain and closer in feel to midcentury originals. The body is fully lined with quilted nylon for warmth and comfort.
The sleeves are made from vegetable-tanned cowhide, which has been carefully selected and processed to age beautifully. Additional details include tonal snap button closures, slanted hand pockets trimmed in leather, and ribbing made from wool at the collar, cuffs, and waistband. Finally, the jacket is fully lined with quilted nylon.
