During WWII, the U.S. Navy introduced a new generation of special-purpose clothing systems to equip servicemen in varying climates. Among these, the N-1 system was developed specifically for cold weather, comprising a full range of garments and accessories. Alongside the now-iconic N-1 Deck Jacket, the FIELD SHOES, N-1, popularly known as Boondockers, remain one of the most enduring pieces. The nickname "Boondocker" came from military slang for remote or rugged terrain, rooted in the Tagalog word bundok.
Issued to Navy personnel deployed at overseas bases, the N-1 boots weren't limited to cold climates alone; they also saw widespread use in tropical and temperate regions. Closely modeled after the Field Shoes adopted by the Marine Corps around 1941, the design was nearly identical, built on a blucher pattern using rough-out cowhide leather.
To conserve wartime materials, the soles and heels incorporated pulverized hemp cord into reclaimed rubber, reducing reliance on virgin rubber while offering added traction. This resulted in a distinct speckled sole pattern that came to define the look of the original. This reproduction features a custom sole made with the same crushed hemp cord method and a steerhide upper that offers durability and rich character as it ages.
The cotton laces are custom-woven and lightly oil-treated, faithfully matching the vintage pair preserved in our archive. Design elements like the low instep and carefully shaped last replicate the understated silhouette of the originals while subtly modernizing fit and comfort.
Markings such as "RAW-CORD" were originally used to denote the conservation-grade sole and are hand-painted here at our Kobe headquarters before being cast into the sole mold.
