The TYPE A-1 REAL McCOY MFG. CO. / SHEEPSKIN is a faithful reproduction of the original A-1 flight jacket first issued to U.S. Army Air Corps pilots in 1927. Prior to its introduction, aviators typically wore one-piece flight suits. The A-1 marked a turning point in military flight apparel, establishing the foundational design that would lead to the iconic A-2 and define U.S. flight jacket standards for generations.

This model is crafted from vegetable-tanned sheepskin with an aniline finish, staying true to original materials used in early production runs. The cotton broadcloth lining and wool ribbing provide period-correct comfort and warmth, while water buffalo buttons and cotton thread construction echo authentic 1920s specifications.

The label displays the drawing number "AN-6501," a designation from the jacket's final production period under the AN (Army/Navy) specification system. Reflecting attempts to standardize features with Navy flight gear, this jacket incorporates snap fasteners on the bottom two front buttons, a detail inspired by the sheepskin 37J1 model used by naval aviators.
