The hooded sweatshirt was originally created in the 1930s by stitching hoods to existing sweatshirt designs, as a functional solution for construction workers enduring freezing New York winters and were quickly adopted by US military for training exercises and physical education classes.
Made in Wakayama, Japan, of 100% cotton on Sinker Weave Machines, which are capable of producing a heavier and denser fabric than loopwheel machines. Sinker machines were the natural successor to loopwheel machines due to their increased speed in fabric production.
This Heavyweight Hooded Sweatshirt is made from a 14oz. weight fabric that has been constructed horizontally opposed to vertically, a technique typically seen on sweatshirts from the 1950s, giving the sweatshirt no seams on the shoulders. The sweatshirt has side gussets to combat against adjustment in size width ways after wash which was a common method in construction seen on sweatshirts from the 50s onwards.
The HOODED SWEATSHIRT / ‘Y’ references Letter Sweaters that were common in Ivy League colleges during the mid-20th century. The oversized Varsity Letter is hand-printed in our Kobe HQ.
