In August 1980, Harvey’s Resort Hotel in Stateline, Nevada, became the site of a bizarre extortion attempt. A sophisticated bomb, disguised as a photocopy machine and weighing over 1,000 pounds, was placed in the hotel by John Birges Sr. and his accomplices. Birges was aformer millionaire who had lost much of his wealth at the Harvery’s Resort Hotel and demanded $3 million from the casino, leaving a detailed note explaining the bomb’s design and threats.

Despite extensive efforts by the bomb squad, the device detonated, causing massive structural damage but no injuries, as the hotel had been evacuated. Birges was later apprehended and sentenced to life imprisonment.

Due to the complexity of the bomb and the high profile nature of the event, in the aftermath, enterprising locals created slogan t-shirts with phrases like “I Got Bombed at Harvey’s” and “I Survived the Harvey’s Bombing.”
